It's been a while...

It's been a while but I'm slowly working my way back up to writing full reviews.
Until then I'll put together a Cover of the Week here, and Aagh of the Week there and of course continue with the increasingly popular Moustache Monday!
The cool kids know that pocketwarcomics.blogspot.com is where the good stuff is kept.
Shhhhh!
Don't let the hipsters or fanboys find out they'll ruin it for everybody...

Cover of the Week Battle Picture Library 18 The Trouble Shooters

There's more than enough chaos in this cover to keep the expectation of drama going. Nothing like the "tough road to glory" carved into the very rubble you are creating and fighting though Also having a tear in the cover around the middle staple helps things along as well.

This a busy cover with great focus.

Here we have two men, both sergeants, from different units clearly giving it to the enemy. The blast from the piat (I thought they were spring loaded), the set grimace and the menacing tommy gun tell me that these men are more than trouble-shooters they look more like trouble-makers.

I think this a great cover - mainly for the chaotic situation these two fellows find themselves in.

Another high scoring effort, Battle Picture Library 18 The Trouble-Shooters deserves no less then 9/10.

Moustache Monday!

The moustache to some is mere adornment, nothing more than a bauble to delight one’s self or others. The moustache is of course more than that. Not only is it a prerequisite for purposeful leadership it also a way to demonstrate purposeful that leadership.
Here we see a moustache used pointedly in expression ready to slap the gruff insolent working class troglodyte like a third hand. Privates clearly have no ideas worth sharing. This young bare knuckled pup is about to discover that a carefully shaped barb delivered by his military, moral and social superior will be far more hurtful than receiving a blow from one of his own rough and tumble kind.

Clearly from this exchange a gentleman will always triumph and the gormless working class type will always suffer. A gentleman will not celebrate or over extend the use of raw naked aggression. A true gentleman will know that those beneath him are always happier when reminded of their correct place.

Moustache Monday!

Seen here in what could be best described as a three quarter rear view (from this position one could certainly reach around and touch the other end) is a manly and purposeful moustache that absolutely drips with authority .
Behind such a tash the C.O. has every right to berate young Lewis. Lewis has every reason to apologise - his only saviour from being manhandled from the office is his earnest appearance and angular jaw. Lewis knows that this time he'll have to take it on the chin and prove himself worthy another time.

Moustache Monday!

Every great moustache has to start somewhere. Should the little fellow here survive the big one he can expect a lifetime of pleasure. Notice how he is already at the centre of the group even though he is sporting a mere wisp of manly adornment. Also of note is that he is wearing an open collar while the gruff fellows around him are properly attired wearing ties with their battle uniforms. Hard to say if the little fellow has been invited down to the back of the barn for a treat or if he's in for a harsh lesson from his better dressed colleagues.

WW2 Drawings

An amazing source of drawings of tanks, planes, ships and other weapons frequently found in pocket war comics.
Really has nothing to do with comics I just think it's an interesting site.

Moustache Monday!

A smart uniform deserves a smart moustache.Sadly despite his high rank and his ability to afford a good tailor this square headed fellow has failed to impress with his poor excuse for a moustache.
In order to look good one has to care. If one only has limited time or limited resources then spending time on one's moustache will return dividends way in excess of the time invested.  This fellow clearly has little or no focus on his priorities.

Only if he spent as much attention to grooming as he has to arranging his campaign ribbons! Then perhaps that may be young lady knocking on his back door instead of a zatfig Englishman.

There's more to life than squareheads.

The number of simply superb Spanish and Italian illustrators and painters, who refined their craft in the UK comics of the 1950s-70s is simply astonishing.

Cloud 109 describes in Boot Camp for Artists that there was more to artists professional lives than drawing an M1935 on top of your typical squarehead.

Moustache Monday!

Ah... the pencil thin moustache much maligned as the sole providence of the spiv is seen here in all it's glorious versatility.  Usually associated with a too-smart suit and slicked down hair the pencil thin is seen here equally at home with wind swept hair and a collar turned up against the elements.
This excellent trimmed example comes to us from War at Sea Picture Library 1 The Devil's Cargo.
Moustaches is there nothing they can't do?

Dead Snow

For every avalanche that buries a bunch of Nazis something like this is bound to happen once every now and again...
