arrrgggghhhh! and other boyhood shorthand
Take any War Picture Library, Battle Picture Library or Commando comic and you will always find someone crying “arrgghhhhh” as they take a bullet, or some German exclaiming “donner und blitzen” as his aircraft explodes around him.
There's always a coward trying to prove himself or some interfering officer who tries to run a battle “by the book”. The enemy is treacherous or some mysterious location holds a significant secret. Sometimes a machine of destruction holds a unique karmic destiny.
Someone is either lost or left behind enemy lines where they make a discovery – a hidden base, a wonder weapon or a traitor. Among the host of less tangible struggles include; the dark secret, the family shame, the family curse or the stigma of not being like the other chaps.
Strangely enough for stories about war and battle where people get killed the dead and dying are usually absent.
There's a lot to like (and make fun of) among the dramatic titles, fantastic artwork, impossible stories, daring heroes, nasty bad guys, body building and not quite diamond rings advertisments.
