They teach this in the British armed forces to this day you know. However now there is a difference. In the past you had to rely on gall and phlegm. Gall and phlegm made empire! Now you can take all the hi-tech background absorbing combat pre-resolved uniforms but they won't hold up against a good pair of khaki shorts worn by a staff sergeant on the run. This man, Dougal, can hide behind this pile of rubble all day and all night and not get discovered.  This is one of reasons why the British won the war and the other allies proved again they were just mere "hanger oners". Sorry Yanks. The moment  you can demonstrate that you can participate in a major conflict in a pair of shorts  you earn the right to enter the pantheon of manly nations.

Americans and knees don't mix.

Americans appear to be such an untrusting lot. What is it in their national psyche that drives them in that direction? Is it because they can't differentiate between accents? Is it because as a non-miliatary short wearing peoples they are unable to grasp the concept of knees at war? Is it because the British are good at that kind of warrior presentation that Americans shun the idea? Or is it an extension of their origins in Puritanism? One thing that is for certain is that they appear to value suspicion.

When it comes to knees the British are usually pretty good. This might be surprising to some. Perhaps the cold weather  might add or create a knee suppression or repression of some kind. Naturally the Mediterranean or tropics allow for release for all that pent up bother.
